ABOUT US

The China Institute

Founded in 1926 by American educators John Dewey, Paul Monroe, and Chinese scholars Hu Shi and Kuo Ping-Wen, China Institute in America is an internationally renowned U.S. non-partisan, non-profit cultural and educational organization, that dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China through programs in art, business, culinary, culture, and education.

 

The China Institute has always been a bridge for cultural exchanges between the East and the West. For 98 years, China Institute has reached millions of people, providing them with the tools to better understand the complexity and dynamism that is China. The Institute is a leader in providing the insight, knowledge, and context about China that goes beyond the headlines.

 

From being a window to China in the United States, the China Institute has become a bridge that closely connects Chinese and Western cultures. Over the years, it has become a gathering place for Chinese Americas to study and exchange ideas.

 

美国华美协进社由美国教育家约翰·杜威、保罗·门罗和中国学者胡适、郭炳文于 1926 年创立,是美国一家国际知名的无党派非营利性文化教育机构,致力于通过艺术、商业、烹饪、文化和教育等项目加深世界对中国的了解。98年来,华美协进社一直是东西方文化交流的桥梁, 是从美国了解中国的窗口。多年来,它已成为美国华人的聚集地, 来这里学习和交流。

The Finance and Economics (FnE) Club 

       The Finance and Economics Club (the “FnE Club”) is a membership-based and funded affinity group sponsored by the China Institute in America.  The FnE Club’s initiative is aimed at better serving the Chinese American community with educational programs and activities related to timely discussions of business and investment issues of interest to the Chinese American community and bridging the gap between Wall Street and Main Street.

      The FnE Club will be governed by a board of members. The FnE Club encourages the exchange and sharing of knowledge and ideas on economics, finance and investment business related matters between the Club members and communities. We develop and promote the education program collaborations with other financial institutions, universities, alumni associations, and non-profit organizations.

 

      The programs of the FnE Club include seminars, panel discussions, conferences, training programs, and special topics/industry/executives’ interviews. The Club will provide a platform with networking opportunities for young Chinese Americas and club members for career development and professional growth, and acquire knowledge and insight, develop business savviness, and improve financial health.

 

      华美金融经济俱乐部(“FnE俱乐部”)致力于普及推广美国华人金融知识教育,旨在更好地服务华人社区,为华尔街金融专业人士和民众投资之间搭桥交流, 共谋发展。华美金融经济俱乐部由会员董事会管理。

Dr. Li Deng is the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer and Global Head of Machine Learning at Vatic Investments. Recognized as one of the world's leading experts in AI, speech technology, and machine learning. Dr. Deng was previously the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer and Head of Machine Learning at Citadel. Before that, he was the Chief Scientist of AI, Founder of the Deep Learning Technology Center, and Partner Research Manager at Microsoft for over 17 years. Dr. Deng is a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering of Canada, the Academy of Sciences (Washington State), IEEE, the Acoustical Society of America, and ISCA, among other technical societies. He has been honored with numerous awards for his pioneering AI research on disrupting speech recognition using large-scale deep learning. During his nearly 30-year career in academia, technology and finance, Dr. Deng has published more than 350 academic papers and authored several books on machine learning and AI, as well as lectured at many of the world’s top universities, institutes and finance summits. In 2012, he published a groundbreaking paper on deep neural networks for speech recognition with Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, a cognitive psychologist and computer scientist who is recognized as the “Godfather of Deep Learning”. Prior to Microsoft, Dr. Deng worked for nearly a decade as a tenured professor at the University of Waterloo. He earned his Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since 2000, Dr. Deng has also been an Affiliate Full Professor at the University of Washington.

Prof. Zhiwu Chen is Chair and Cheng Yu-Tung Professor in Finance at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He currently serves as director of both Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) and Centre for Quantitative History (CQH). Professor Chen was a former Professor of Finance at Yale University (1999-2017) and a Special-Term Visiting Professor at Peking University (School of Economics) and Tsinghua University (School of Social Sciences). Prof. Chen’s research covers finance theory, the sociology of finance, economic history, quantitative history, emerging markets, as well as China’s economy and capital markets. He has received research awards including the Graham and Dodd Award (2013), the Pacesetter Research Award (1999), the Merton Miller Prize (1994), and the Chicago Board Options Exchange Competitive Research Award (1994). He has also received a number of book awards in China and Hong Kong, among which are 23 awards for The Logic of Finance in China and Hong Kong, and the best book award from hexun.com for Why are the Chinese Industrious and Yet Not Rich. Prof. Chen has been a member of the HKU Council since November 2018. He also served on the International Advisory Board of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) (2012-19), the Expert Advisory Board for the formation of the China Investment Corporation (2007), and the board of directors as an independent director for corporates. He was on the Board of Trustees of the Yale-China Association and the 12th and 13th Five-Year Plan Advisory Commission to the Beijing Municipal Government. He was a co-founder and partner of Zebra Capital Management from 2001 to 2011. Prof. Chen is a frequent contributor to media publications in China on topics of economic policy, market development, institutional reform, and historical research. His work has been widely published and regularly featured in major newspapers and magazines in the United States, Hong Kong, China and many other countries. Professor Chen received his PhD in financial economics from Yale University in 1990. He has been an endowed professor since joining HKU in July 2016. Professor Chen was conferred the title of Chair Professor of Finance in recognition of his contribution to finance in July 2019.

Mr. Che Guan is a Vice President and Principal Data Scientist at AllianceBernstein. Over the years, Dr. Guan has been actively engaged in development and research of machine learning, data science, quantitative strategy, and financial application of natural language processing with top financial firms of J. P. Morgan, AllianceBernstein, and Raymond James. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering.

Sean Li is currently a Chief Investment Officer at Bridger Investment Partners with extensive experience and skill set of Loans, MBS, Mortgage Lending, Valuation, Fixed Income, and FinTech AI application. His industry experience also includes Roosevelt Management Company, Sunny Capital Partners Management, Structured Portfolio Management and BlackRock. Sean Li holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University.

Maggie Wang is a Managing Director and the Global Head of CLO and Private Credit Research at Citigroup. Maggie advises over 900 global institutional clients on fixed-income investments, including banks, insurers, hedge funds, private equity, and family offices. Maggie started her career at JP. Morgan and has been a top-ranked analyst in the All-American Institutional Investors survey since 2007. She regularly speaks at global conferences and publishes research on relative value, trade ideas, and CLO manager evaluations, and she is frequently featured on Bloomberg, the Financial Times, the WSJ, and Barron's.

Eli Han is an experienced transactional and regulatory attorney practicing in financial services. He specializes in capital markets, structured financing, complex financial products, private investment funds, and securities and financial market regulations with work experiences at both Wall Street law firms and global financial institutions. Mr. Han, as a partner, joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2017. Prior to that, he served on two secondment stints as in-house counsel at Deutsche Bank’s Investment Banking Division and JPMorgan Asset Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, and J.D. from Cornell Law School.

 William Liu/刘武

 Chairman of the Board

William Liu is a 20-years Wall Street veteran and has extensive investment and management experience at leading Wall Street firms, including Credit Suisse First Boston, Bank of New York, Ivy Asset Management, and Lyra Capital. He is currently the Chief Strategy Officer of Global Lights Acquisition Corp. and a partner at Global Business Strategy Corporation. As a senior executive, Dr. Liu has focused on hedge fund investment, development of FoF/MoM solutions and global asset allocation. He has also managed multi-billion alternative fund risk platforms, implemented investment guidelines, and oversaw multi-strategy fund products, investment due diligence of HF, PE and VC, and quantitative analysis and applications of machine learning in business. Prior to joining financial firms on Wall Street, Dr. Liu worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at Columbia University, New York.

Gang Wu is the chairman of DoubleBridge Group and president and CEO of DoubleBridge Technologies Inc, and the President of DoubleBridge Capital. He served also as the global chief technology officer of ChinaSoft International and the director of the New York consulting department of Oracle Corporation and the project director at Citibank. The American DoubleBridge Group is a multinational company with diversified operations including investment, software and information technology, energy and culture. Dr. Wu once served as a member of the Asian Advisory Committee to the President of the Colorado State Senate and was named the Outstanding Asian Entrepreneur in North America. Mr. Wu is a member of the board of directors of the New York Chapter of the International Leadership Foundation. He won the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award and the “Excellent Leadership Award” from the International Leadership Foundation. Mr. Wu Gang holds a Doctor of Science degree.

Dapeng Hu, PhD, CFA, Managing Director, Global Head of Aladdin Sustainability Analytics and Co-Chair of Aladdin Sustainability Lab in BlackRock. He is responsible for the research and development of sustainability and climate analytics of BlackRock's portfolio management and enterprise risk management system. Dr. Hu manages a global cross-functional team of professionals with deep expertise in climate, sustainability, AI and financial modeling. Prior to joining BlackRock in 2003, Dr. Hu was a Director with Wells Fargo and a Vice President at Citigroup. Before joining the industry, Dr. Hu was a member of the research faculty in the Real Estate Department at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hu holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania

John Shen serves as the Chief Investment Officer at Horizon Vision Capital Advisors LLC, a position he has focused on real estate investing since 2019. Prior to his current roles, Mr. Shen held the position of Chief Operating Officer at ABL Global Asset Management in Seoul and other leadership positions, including Chief Risk Officer at ACTIAM N.V. in the Netherlands and Chief Investment Officer at China Everbright Limited in Hong Kong. During his tenure at China Everbright Limited, he spearheaded a multi-strategy hedge fund platform and led a team of 25 professionals, including 7 Portfolio Managers. Earlier in his career, Mr. Shen held senior roles in risk management and quantitative analytics at renowned firms such as Chilton Investment Company, Cheyne Capital in the UK and Rochdale Investment Company, where he managed 3 funds, earning 5-star rankings by Morningstar. He earned his CFA designation in 1999 and an MBA in Finance from Columbia Business School.

Dr. Eugene Xu is currently a Managing Partner of New Jersey based real estate investment firm GardenStar Group, LLC. He was a Co-Founder, Chief Risk Officer and Head of Investing Technology at LibreMax Capital, LLC, a New York based hedge fund from 2010 until he retired from the firm at the end of 2019. From 2000 to 2010, he worked in Deutsche Bank Securities’ New York office, where he served as Director and Head of Residential Mortgage-related ABS Research, and then Managing Director and Head of ABS Trading Strategy and Quantitative Modeling. From 1997 to 2000, he served as a Vice President at ABS Research at Credit Suisse, where he was responsible for quantitative analysis, subordinate MBS strategies, and other research projects. Dr. Xu served as Vice President in MBS Research at Chase Securities from 1996 to 1997 and Smith Barney from 1993 to 1996. He was also a Research Member for the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Dr. Xu holds a B.Sc. degree, a M.Sc. degree in Mathematics from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, and holds a Ph.D. from University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Xu’s research work on subprime mortgages before 2008 was widely known in the MBS investment circle as it was extensively covered in Baron’s feature article Coming Home to Roost on its February 13, 2006 issue. It was also covered by two New York Times non-fiction bestsellers: Gregory Zuckerman’s The Greatest Trade Ever and Michael Lewis’s The Big Short, the latter was adapted into a motion picture which won 2016 Academy Awards in five categories, including the Best Picture. His profile was also featured in March 21, 2011’s Institutional Investors Magazine article The Future Faces of Hedge Funds, among other media coverages.
